Chemical Peel Q & A
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment that uses chemicals to erase the top layers of your skin. This exposes younger and smoother-looking skin.
The strength of your chemical peel can vary, depending on the results you're looking for. The aesthetic team at Dermatology Associates of Central NJ offers light, medium, or deep chemical peels.
A light chemical peel is good for a quick refresher, while a deep chemical peel is aimed at treating more involved skin concerns. It's important to remember that the deeper the peel, the longer the recovery time. You can use chemical peels in combination with other cosmetic procedures or on their own, and the team at Dermatology Associates of Central NJ can help you develop a skin care treatment that's right for you.
Why Should I get a chemical peel?
Doctors suggest chemical peels for many cosmetic and medical reasons. The most common reasons are:
- Fine wrinkles
- Acne
- Acne scars
- Uneven skin tone
- Dryness
- Precancerous growths
The skilled team at Dermatology Associates of Central NJ explains how deep of a peel they recommend and why a chemical peel is included in your treatment plan.
How does a chemical peel work?
Chemical peels work by applying a chemical solution to your skin, usually your face. The deeper the chemical peel, the more potent the solution needs to be. The solution erases damaged outer layers of skin, with light peels removing the fewest layers and deep peels removing the most. The damaged skin blisters and then peels or flakes off of your face.
How long is the recovery from a chemical peel?
Different chemical peels require different recovery times. A light chemical peel does not need any recovery time, and you can return to normal activities immediately. You can have a light chemical peel once every 2-5 weeks.
Medium chemical peels begin to heal in 3-7 days, with your skin fully healed in two weeks, and you can repeat a medium peel every 3-9 months.
A deep chemical peel starts healing in 7-10 days, with full healing taking as long as two months. Deep chemical peels are not repeated.
