How CoolSculpting® Can Get Rid of Your Love Handles

Sometimes it seems as though love handles are a natural part of getting older, something about which you can do little, no matter how much you diet or exercise. While it’s true your body might change the way it stores fat over time, you still have control over your contours with CoolSculpting®, a natural way to freeze and eliminate fat cells.
At Dermatology Associates of Central NJ in Old Bridge, Toms River, Union, and Freehold, New Jersey, we’re proud to offer CoolSculpting to our patients with stubborn fat deposits that resist reshaping. Here’s what you need to know about the process and how it can help you achieve the body lines you’re after.
How CoolSculpting works
Simply, CoolSculpting freezes fat cells in selected treatment areas, triggering natural cell death. These fat cells break down and your body starts to clear away cellular waste. Stubborn fat disappears over the coming weeks, and it’s done without surgery or harming the skin.
Fat cells can’t handle the same range of cold temperatures that your skin can. The controlled temperature of the CoolSculpting device freezes fat before it’s cold enough to harm your skin. It’s a process called cryolipolysis.
Love handles and more
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clears CoolSculpting for treatment of nine common locations for stubborn fat rolls, including:
- The flanks (commonly referred to as the love handles)
- Submental fat (under the chin)
- Jawline
- Upper arms
- Back fat
- Bra fat
- Abdomen
- Lower buttocks
- Thighs
Body contouring with CoolSculpting is quite effective for pockets of unwanted fat, but it’s not meant for use as a weight loss procedure. You’re a good candidate for CoolSculpting when you’re at or near your ideal body weight, with problem areas of stubborn fat cells that resist your diet and exercise efforts.
What to expect
Depending on the areas being treated, each CoolSculpting session lasts between 35 to 75 minutes. You’re seated comfortably, and you can use your treatment time to relax, read, or catch up with messages.
Your treatment starts with a thin gel pad placed over the targeted areas, after which we position the CoolSculpting applicator on top. Activating the device produces gentle suction that pulls the fat into the applicator, between two cooling panels.
You’ll feel slight tugging as fat is drawn into the applicator. Initially, you’ll feel the cold, but the area quickly becomes numb and you’re barely aware of the treatment cycle.
One CoolSculpting treatment eliminates about 25% of the fat in the treatment zone, though results vary between patients. Your aesthetic goals may benefit from a series of treatments.
The great part of CoolSculpting is that there’s no downtime after your session. You can return comfortably to your normal day. What’s more, your results are progressive as your body eliminates treated fat. You’ll see initial improvements in about 10 days with fat loss continuing for up to six months, with optimal progress showing in six to eight weeks.
